Silence
Usually when a movie is over and the lights come come up in the theater, people begin to stand up and make their way down the aisle to the exit. While doing this there is chatter about the movie being good or bad, or too long, or not what one thought it would be, etc...But at the end of Milk, there was silence. Not one sound was heard until people stepped out to the common hallway area. That's how powerful a story this was and how brilliantly Sean Penn portrayed Harvey Milk. He really brought him to life.
Seeing the movie Milk was very personal for me. Which is ironic because his life and and accomplishments are so public and known. He educated scores of people, inspired young and old alike, stood up to discrimination, and served his fellow citizens. The movie intensely showed how he never stopped rising to challenges even after many defeats. He left this world too soon but changed it in ways that will be felt forever.
If you have not seen this movie, don't miss it.

same thing happened at the theatre in which i saw MIlk, and i saw it in a straight west-suburban community of Chicago. Most of the people in the theatre were straight. no one moved and the silence was, as they say, deafening. there were people crying too. i think maybe some of them got it. it's not a sex issue; it's an equality issue...
