WTF?
Excerpt from interview on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer
The South Dakota Legislature has made it a crime for a doctor to perform an abortion under any circumstances except to save the life of the mother. There are no exceptions for rape, incest or to preserve the health of the mother. Should this strike you as hard cheese, State Sen. Bill Napoli, R-Rapid City, explains how rape and incest could be exceptions under the "life" clause. Napoli believes most abortions are performed for "convenience," but he told "The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer" about how he thinks a "real-life example" of the exception could be invoked:
"A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl, could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life."
I can respect arguments made on both sides of the abortion debate, but there are so many things wrong with his view on when an exception could be made. First of all, the phrase "sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it" just can't possibly come from a senators mouth can it? And what kind of fantasys is this guy harboring to come up with such a description and say it on an interview show with such flippant disregard. I guess only a truly pure woman (??) is able to suffer enough? I am constantly amazed that people like this think they are in positions to decide ethics and morality when they have such an outdated and obscure view of the world and clearly cannot communicate their views in a manner that does not insult the intelligence of others or embarrass them and the positions they hold in the process.

Yes, let's allow Senator Napoli to determine whether a woman is a #1 a virgin #2 believes in the same god as Sen. Napoli, #3 was not only raped but sodomized, #4 was "sufficiently" brutilized and #5 was "messed up" physically. Of course she would have to prove all these things to a judge first. With the proper evidence from police reports, emergency room doctors, her minister and psychiatrists, the judge AND Sen. Napoli should be able to reach an agreement. But lets NOT DARE leave the decision to the woman and her doctor.
