De-stressed now

Friday night after work cocktails works wonders.

March 30, 2006

Stress sucks

Work has been stressing me out lately and this has been affecting my sunny disposition. Without me spreading my sunshine, the world is being robbed of my greatness. And what a tragedy that is.

Begin regular coworker rant now ...
My co manager and I hate calling her that as it gives the false impression that she is anywhere near the level of common sense and work ethic that a typical manager has, is gone again today after leaving at 12:30 yesterday. WTF? I am just amazed at this person. If she thinks that when I enter time sheets into the computer this week that I am not putting down her time away form the office she is crazy. Although calling her crazy is an insult to all the crazy people out there who no matter how crazy they are, still are way ahead on the evolutionary ladder. A bank branch cannot be run by one person. One person cannot be responsible for bringing in business, customer service, overseeing the staff, and handling all the operational aspects. I will be sharing this bit of information with her and trying my best not to be like "errrrr DUH"
Duuuh.jpg "DUUUUUHH"

This in addition to my ongoing talks about my compensation has made the last week or two stressful. I would just like it to be finalized, but nothing happens quickly at this company. If I come across another offer, they would have only themselves to blame for not just dealing with it.

Late Night TV

I watched the Sopranos last night and dreamt about just about every character. It was weird because on the show, the main character was dreaming also. I think I would make a good mob guy. The gay mafia or the regular one, either way I have no preferences. One would be more intimidating, and the other less messy I think. So there are pros and cons.

I also woke up this morning with the theme song from the Dukes of Hazard in my head. This from watching the start of the TV Land awards show very late last night. Bo and Luke were singing it.

I should really turn off the TV and have some quiet time before falling asleep.

This lead to conversations at work this morning about old TV shows that soon spread to other offices. One colleague emailed me the entire theme written out word for word from Family Ties and ended it with "Sit Ubu sit, good dog. ruff"

Sometimes we have too much time on our hands.

No pics

Didn't get out to take pics as planned. Cloudy and kind of dreary today. And let's face it, I'm lazy. So the picture montage of Pittsburgh will have to wait a bit.

March 25, 2006

Long week over

It was a particularly long week. I am glad it is over. Although it ended on a nice note, had a nice dinner out with Paul and Alison last night, a trip to the South Side Dairy Queen, and then back to their house to watch The Sopranos. I have not kept my New Year's resolution about keeping a regular sleep schedule and that is contributing to my long days. I need to start going to bed earlier and getting up when my alarm clock goes off and not hitting the snooze button five times. Anyway, today I worked, went jogging, and cleaned my apartment a bit. Very tired, now I am content to just kick back, relax, and be a couch potato for awhile.

Is Pittsburgh making me soft?

Pittsburgh, like every other city, has its share of homeless people who beg for money. There does not seem to be too many around, but I see one from time to time. Every so often I will be walking on the same sidewalk that someone has planted themselves on in the hopes of making contact with a generous or naive person. Sometimes I give a bit of money, usually a dollar or two, and sometimes I just keep looking forward and walk right on by. I don't know what makes me decide when to give and when to not. Some weeks money is tighter than others or maybe it is my mood at that particular time. Or maybe I have some physic power that weeds out the truly needy and those that I would just be adding to their cigarette or booze fund.

I was pondering all this because tonight just a little while ago as I came out of the grocery store someone who looked like the typical down on their luck person politely asked me if I could possibly spare bus fare so he could get to a shelter downtown on Sheffield St. I pretended I did not hear him and kept walking but then something made me stop. Maybe it was my physic power telling me he was ok, maybe it was because I knew that there is a homeless shelter downtown somewhere. Or maybe it was guilt. With most of my money going to pay down debt, I don't have a surplus to throw around, the occasional dinner out, movie, or trip to the coffee shop are my big spending sprees right now. Maybe it was because I figured if I am able to go to the store just to spend five bucks on some ice cream I suddenly got a huge craving for (Edy's carmel delight -- try it) , then I can help out my fellow man with $1.75 for a bus ride. Either way I went back into the store because I was carrying only plastic, and proceeded to purchase a pack of gum and get some cash back so I could give the guy two bucks. Would he use it booze or drugs or would he have a much needed meal and good night's sleep at the shelter? I guess I hope for the best and that the latter happens. Looking back I did see him standing at the bus stop so hopefully a little thing like $2.00 did some good. If so it would be worth skipping the coffee shop one day and drinking the slop in the office coffee maker.

March 22, 2006

Lunch time ponderings

The Daily Show with John Stewart is the best show on television. The montages put together from speeches given by Bush are just great TV. Last night was another classic.

I wish I was better at keeping in touch. My intentions and actions often do not coincide. I hope nobody I care about equates my forgetfulness/laziness with not having the desire.

The world would be a much better place if people didn't worry so much about the lives of others.

I re-used a coffee filter (with fresh grounds added) that had sat overnight in the coffee pot because I left myself no time to stop and get some and was out of new ones. Is that gross? Do bad things grow that quickly in a moist room temperature environment?

Right now I am sitting in the conference room at my work typing this and listening to the inane conversations of my staff. Would it be an HR issue if I just yelled out the door "For the love of god just shut the fuck up"? It's been a long day and it's only half over. Damn those TPS reports.

I am playing racquetball tonight with Paul. If I pretend the court is my office, I should be able to shut him out.

I just offered to work this Saturday for someone because I am such a nice guy. My five day week turned into a six day week. Oh well, maybe I get some karma points for it.

Ned Flanders amuses me.

I am going to go out and about this weekend and take pictures of Pittsburgh. Super cool neato fantastic pictures too. I shall post some.

Along with all the positive aspects of my job in Pittsburgh compared to Michigan comes a negative: More and higher taxes. Dear Uncle Sam, since I'm paying more taxes, how about a few more civil rights in return?

While still cold, the sun has been out lately. It makes me want my motorcycle.

Monday rant

So I'm at work this morning and my daffy but usually well meaning co-worker arrives just over an hour late. I didn't bother asking why and she didn't offer any explanation. I was just left thinking how nice it would be to come and go whenever you want. It's not like we have specific hours of operation or anything. Oh wait, we do. They are posted right there on the fron door at eye level. We even have a schedule telling us to be at work by 8:30.
Then about 11:30 she leaves. I know there was a meeting about twenty minutes away today at 3:30 but 11:30?? Don't worry honey, I'll just take care of every detail here and hold down the fort. Have fun in la la land but don't get too distracted by all the shiny objects.

However, by mid day my mood and day improved because I finally was able to get some coffee. I also received a big box of Twizzlers in the interoffice mail. (thanks Lil, I love it when you go to Costco)

Is it Friday yet?

Hello from earth...

Excerpts from news story:
A group of conservative groups reinstated a boycott of Ford Motor Co. cars and trucks because the automaker backed away from a pledge to stop advertising in publications aimed at gays and lesbians.

The proposed yearlong boycott, led by the Tupelo, Miss.-based American Family Association, stems from the groups' belief that Ford has not "remained neutral in the cultural battles."

The groups said on its Web site it "tried every avenue open to get Ford to stop their promotion of homosexuality."

Jesus-tap-dancing-Christ where do I start?

First of all to all the hypocritical morons in these kinds of groups. I guess you will also need to boycott companies like:
General Mills, Kraft, Procter & Gamble, Coca Cola, Campbell Soup, Best Buy, Costco, Anheuser-Busch, Kellogg,
Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Whirlpool, General Electric, Sara Lee, Microsoft, Hasbro, Apple, Dell, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, AT&T, Motorola, SBC, Comcast, Cingular, Borders, Amazon, Hallmark, Xerox, Eastman Kodak, all the major airlines along with majior hotel chains and car rentals, the big name casinos, Time Warner

The list goes on and on.

Also, you may want to cancel your credit cards and bank accounts because all those big companies operate in the real world too.

You also need to create an insurance co-op for you and your ignorant members since all the big name insurance corporations have gay friendly policies.

Forget about shopping at your local mall too. Those stores are sinners too. Sears, Nike, Levi Strauss, etc.

Make your own coffee, Starbucks likes us too.

You can have crackle barrel.

But deliver your own packages because FedEx and UPS don't have their head up their asses.
This will be hard to do on your bike that can only be made in Iran because all the auto makers have gay friendly policies.

P.S. You would think lessons would be learned from the attempted and miserably failed multi year boycotts of Walt Disney World, Kraft, and Nike to name a few. Idiots.

I'm glad these groups become less and less relevent as time goes on.

Oxygen please

Went running today in Frick Park. I figure I ran at least three miles which is really good for me. Especially when you consider that you can't go more than 100 feet without going up a hill. So three miles up and down the hilly trails is a good feat. I do need some new shoes for those unpaved trails (I'll add those to my growing list) but it is fun terrain. So I'm happy with myself for my first outing and may be a bit sore later, but that goes away with regular workouts.

Now if I could only make myself get up early in the morning and do this before work.

Free food Wednesday

Had breakfast with a coworker this morning before work and they picked up the tab. Then at lunch time a VP who was working out of my branch today invited me to lunch. And tonight I attended a local Chamber of Commerce meeting and networking event where a huge spread was provided along with all kinds of cocktails. I even won a drawing and the prize included a restaurant gift card.

I'm full now.

DowntownTuesday

Got a break from the branch today and went downtown for a meeting after getting on my:

Arrived at our offices a bit early (this building is our Pittsburgh headquarters)
pa0880.jpg

for what I thought was an all day meeting, but it actually only took half the day. So for about a nano second me and my fellow managers contemplated going back to work. We parted ways and I decided to walk around the city

I could easily work/live downtown. It is so alive with activity and there is an energy about it that I like.

I guess I won't see you in hell ...

After you die...
Parallel Universe

After death, you will continue to exist as if nothing has ever happened. You will continue to be yourself, but because you are in a parallel universe, some things will be different. You may not have married the same person, you might live in a different spot, but you will be the same person underneath it all and you will continue your life unaware that you ever died.

Take this quiz at QuizGalaxy.com

GRRRRR

WHY do they even make "spice" jelly beans and WHY do I keep picking those up instead of the regular ones?

I so wanted jelly beans, but it is so not worth it to go back out to the store.

Caribou Coffee pondering - broadening horizons?

Ok,
Made the move. Holiday's are done. Am settled in and comfortable in my new city and job.

So, I guess it's time to put myself out there and start living life. For as much as I like going out and trying new things, I have the tendencies of an introvert. I like new experiences and social situations, but get too comfy enjoying quiet evenings, relaxing and being content lounging on the couch with my music, crosswords, and cable news.

That being said, I joined an online social network that lets you network with local people both socially and professionally by joining or starting forums. They range from business, sports, politics, and different causes. You can also become an eActivist and do your part to support candidates and causes and getting out the vote. I studied it a bit and heard some good feedback so I think I will enjoy it.

I also will be attending an open house the first week of April at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Pittsburgh which is right in my neighborhood. It is scheduled to be a night of meeting the board of directors of the center as well as a tour of the facilities followed by discussions of issues. It is also a chance to meet representatives of other organizations through which I would like to, in the near future, volunteer at. It will be a good informational showcase of some groups or clubs I would be interested in joining.

I was looking into the spring season of a local softball league but I will have to take a pass on that this season. There may be a late summer/fall season though.

Of cousre thanks to Paul I am playing racquetball again and learning guitar, chord by chord.

Eh, it's a start

Productive day

Got some exercise.
Visited with a coworker
Cleaned my apartment. It really needed it.
Went to an artists opening with Paul at Alison's gallery
Tried a neighborhood restaurant and homus for the first time and liked both.
Even got in a nap.

I have realized I need to be more open minded about restaurants. I have gone by this restaurant we ate in today practically every day but never considered it an option. It has Greek/Middle Eastern food and I guess I need some prodding to go outside of my usual three: American, Italian, and Chinese food. But I am discovering that there is a a lot of tasty offerings in the places that seem "exotic" at first.

March 10, 2006

Hee hee

I'm watching a show right now that has a lady with huge breasts being surrounded by cats wanting a drink.

I'm easily amused.

Glad the weekend is here

After working all day today, I had to go downtown to the Pittsburgh Convention Center to man the booth the bank set up at the annual Home and Garden Show. Everybody was encouraged to "volunteer" to work shifts at this weeklong event. I "volunteered" for the 7-10 shift. I had not been down to the convention center yet and was a bit apprehensive about driving down in rush hour and finding it and parking. Traffic was not too bad and I took a route that I had been down already but the parking deck was full so I had to bypass it. This meant that I wound up going down some streets that did not look familiar. So while I was looking up at the buildings as points of reference, I found myself heading back onto the freeway. Oops. So with no chance to turn around and head back, I had to go back to my Squirell Hill exit and head back into downtown again. At least I knew where to go heading into town. Parked a couple blocks away at a public lot for five bucks so that wasn't too bad. The show was full of people wandering around for the free give aways that the vendors hand out. Boooooring.

WTF?

Excerpt from interview on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer

The South Dakota Legislature has made it a crime for a doctor to perform an abortion under any circumstances except to save the life of the mother. There are no exceptions for rape, incest or to preserve the health of the mother. Should this strike you as hard cheese, State Sen. Bill Napoli, R-Rapid City, explains how rape and incest could be exceptions under the "life" clause. Napoli believes most abortions are performed for "convenience," but he told "The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer" about how he thinks a "real-life example" of the exception could be invoked:

"A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl, could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life."

I can respect arguments made on both sides of the abortion debate, but there are so many things wrong with his view on when an exception could be made. First of all, the phrase "sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it" just can't possibly come from a senators mouth can it? And what kind of fantasys is this guy harboring to come up with such a description and say it on an interview show with such flippant disregard. I guess only a truly pure woman (??) is able to suffer enough? I am constantly amazed that people like this think they are in positions to decide ethics and morality when they have such an outdated and obscure view of the world and clearly cannot communicate their views in a manner that does not insult the intelligence of others or embarrass them and the positions they hold in the process.

Ouch

Five games of racquetball with Paul.

Very sore.

The BS seems to be over ... for now

bullshit.png

Work has calmed down a bit this week. The big bosses have all done their morale visits that included pep talks. They all should really get together and go over what they are saying, because they all say exactly the same thing like they are reading from a script. It does not exactly make one feel the sincerity since nobody can be original in their speeches. I did have my chat with my one regional manager touching on the issue of not attributing information given by others to everyone at the branch. She understood what I was saying. I did bring up my issue of salary again and even got un-requested support from my co-manager. I pointed out that if I was coming from another bank or left and my position had to be filled, the pay for my position would be higher that I am getting now. Then, while alone with her, my co-manager told our boss that I "practically run this branch by myself" and she would hate to lose another person over a pay issue such as this one. The boss agreed with her and said it is something we would address at our meeting next week. I now have a very good argument for a substantial increase since the company gave managers HR tasks and gave us online access to our employees information in order to remove them from the system, update their status, put in raise requests, and post open positions. Included in this information is their salary information. So not only do I know what my co manager makes, but also the other employees in the branch. I really have a good relationship with my bosses here in Pittsburgh so the discussions are not adversarial in any way, they are open and respectful. We have also talked about future happenings in the affiliate which will be creating new positions and I have been upfront about where I want to be in the company. They like having career plans in place. So I am keeping my fingers crossed and have confidence that an agreement can be reached but I am also keeping one eye on the open positions at other banks, just in case.

Discrimination costs

Speak up and work for change to those things which are unjust, ridiculous, and just plain wrong.

Thought provoking article in a time when our militray needs all the soldiers it can get who want to serve their country.

Discrimination Costs

by Libby Post

Discriminating against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community doesn’t come cheap.
According to the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military at the University of California/Santa Barbara, the government spent $363 million purging the military of lesbian and gay soldiers in the ten years since Don't Ask, Don't Tell has been in effect. In that decade, 1994 through 2003, more than 10,000 true-blue, dedicated soldiers and other military personnel have been thrown out of the armed forces just because of who they love.
We’re not just talking guys and girls in army greens who are supposedly building democracy in war-torn Iraq. We're talking about 55 Arabic and 9 Farsi interpreters who were fired by the Army because of their sexual orientation. We're talking about 244 doctors, nurses and medical specialists. We're talking about fixed-wing pilots and military police and operations staff and educators and information officers and bomber pilots and chaplains.
We're talking about spending $36,300 per purge of our tax dollars to run people who want to serve our country out of the armed forces. What a waste of money. What a waste of talent. But, that's not unusual for this administration. Just go to the National Priorities Project website at www.nationalpriorities.org and click on the Cost of War interactive tool on the right side of the page. You'll see a ticker that as of this writing had us spending over $244 billion dollars on the war on Iraq.
And as that ticker increases second by second, the military continues to purge lesbian and gay personnel costing us even more. But the costs aren't just economic. By firing 244 medical personnel, the Pentagon has also imperiled the troops that are currently on the ground.
According to Dr. Aaron Belkin, Director of the Santa Barbara Center, the gay ban is hampering military readiness. "The consequences of shortfalls in medical specialists during wartime are serious," he said. "When the military lacks the medical personnel it needs on the frontlines, it compromises the well-being not only of its injured troops, but of the overextended specialists who have to work longer tours to replace those who have been discharged."
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that firing Arabic and Farsi interpreters isn't good for the war effort either.
Government sponsored discrimination against the LGBT community is a tremendous waste of taxpayer dollars. Consider the amount of money Congress is spending trying to pass a Constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. The printing, the staff time, the phone calls, the costs of keeping Congress open while some of this country’s top homophobes pontificate for the local news how red-blooded American families would be subverted if gays were allowed to marry.
In the early 90's, folks in Denver found out how costly discrimination was when Colorado's Amendment 2 passed. It prohibited a government entity from extending any type of legal protection to the LGBT community. Within seven months of its passing in 1992, more than 60 companies cancelled conventions or meetings in Colorado, approximately 20 U.S. municipalities severed ties with the state including New York City which divested any stock holdings it had with any Colorado companies. The Amendment is no more-the Supreme Court overturned it on the equal protection clause of the Constitution.
But when the County Commission in Hillsborough County, FL passed a resolution in 2005 to "abstain from acknowledging, promoting or participating in gay pride events" (they specifically used a lower case g and p to cover all things gay pride-related, not just one event), shockwaves of fear ran through the local business communities. Mary Scott, the general manager of the Marriott Waterside Resort in Tampa was quoted in the local business paper saying, "If this gets national attention, it could be disastrous."
Well, it did get national attention. But leave it to the LGBT community to come up with a truly creative way to give the Hillsborough homophobes the attention they deserved. Instead of a boycott, Equality Florida, the sunshine’s state's LGBT advocacy group, called for a Buycott. Essentially, LGBT owned or supportive companies were asked to sign up on the buycottfl.org website. The Buycott campaign then encouraged consumers in Hillsborough County and people coming to the Tampa/St. Peter area for tourism or convention purposes to patronize those 300 or so businesses that had taken a stand for diversity and against bigotry.
For those companies who lost business and for the folks in the military who have lost their jobs, one thing is crystal clear-discrimination doesn't pay.

DOH

This link is a video of a real life Simpsons intro, check it out, kinda cool.

That's a wrap

Boss is gone. It's good that it is finally over. The regional manager and an HR person came out to the branch and stayed while she cleaned out her desk. I had to not only find a box for her to pack up personal belongings, but also take them out to her car. I felt like I was a security guard escorting her out of the building. The HR person also stuck to her like glue the whole time. After she was gone, everyone in the office got the one on one meeting with regional manger making sure we were ok and seeing if we needed anything, blah, blah, blah. Then yesterday the President of the affiliate came out for individual meetings with me and the other office manager. We had a good talk, only took about ten minutes, we actually talked about future happenings at the bank more than we did my former boss. He knew and I gave the impression that I was fine with everything and I had been through manager changes before. We have had good conversations before so he knew where I was coming from. My daffy coworker however was in with him for an hour. I think she needed to be talked off the ledge or she was regailing him with all the happenings in the little bizarre world that she lives in. Either way, I am sure I will get the full and long version of it on Monday. She and my former boss were friends and came as a package when hired in and they both have had issues with certain people in upper management. I know they addressed those in these meetings and the Prez is meeting with regional managers to discuss.

My only concern is not being lumped in with all the things said in these meetings and exit interview. Working as a team at a branch, views and gossip tend to get you lumped together as a whole source rather than individually. I do not share the views they do and have not had any problems working with or getting along with my regional managers. I did leave a message for my regional manager to call me so I can touch on that issue. I have some specific things I needed to go over anyway and will be able to segue way into this area with no problem.

My ice cream is melting

So if you and your teeny tiny little cro magnon brain that just cannot handle sliding, putting items in a bag, and paying for them without your eyes glossing over and going into an upright coma could please use the lines where the rocket scientists in the aprons will do all that for you, I would really appreciate it.

No surprise

The headline read something like: Contrary to earlier statements, video shows Bush was warned before Katrina hit.

We have gotten to the point with this administration that there is no clarification necessary, no link to the story necessary, no surprise emotions, and nothing more to say than just "sigh"

Boo hiss

Like an excessively long and boring movie, the production that I call my job and its ongoing plot will just not end. With no car chases or sex scenes to entertain, I wonder if there will there be anyone left in the theater to see how it ends or will everyone be in the bathroom collectively hurling their popcorn? It feels like we will never get to roll the credits listing all the amateur actors who have contributed to the story that makes one laugh, cry, swear, and roll their eyes all on a daily basis.

In an unprecedented move in my company, the big bosses are making my boss work out her two weeks notice in an attempt to change her mind. While I think it is good that they are trying to address the issues she brought up in an exit interview, the characters involved in those issues aren't going anywhere anytime soon and the chances of us all being one big happy family after the curtain falls is slim. So it seems that now those of us watching this train wreck are simply enjoying a brief intermission while waiting for the next act.
