Let me get this straight ...

At first war was necessary because there were WMD's. Then, no WMD's. But there was a dictator to get rid of and that would help the terror war and help stabalize the Middle East. Dictator ousted but more evil has taken his place, stability is much worse, and we were told we need to stay to prevent a civil war. Now that is happening with the Shiites and Sunis.

What is the next excuse? Maybe Cheney can shoot someone else to take it off the front page for a week or two while some other brilliant rationalization is thought up.

Hmmm

It's been said recently: "You really can't be happy and fullfilled in life and relationships unless you are happy with yourself."

Panera

The cinnamon bagels at Panera are the best bagels in the whole universe and probably other universes too. They have a crust of cinnamon on them and when slathered with butter and heated in the microwave for about eight seconds, they transform into gooey cinnamon goodness. Also Panera is the one place I have found cinnamon bagels without raisins in them.

So in conclusion, I recommend them.

Spidey was feeling a bit gay in bright colors ...

But he clarified "Not that there's anything wrong with that."

Spider-Man 3 goes goth. Or at least darker in this teaser pic for the upcoming film. 1 and 2 were pretty good, hope 3 lives up to the franchise.

UGH

I still have to do my taxes. I'm hoping to at least break even this year because I can write off some "reasonbale" moving expenses. Things like gas spent on moving vehicles, maintenace done to vehicles before trip, any storage fees, and some other little stuff I did not think about but was reminded of by a tax professional giving out some free advice. It all adds up little by little.

By BEN DOBBIN, Associated Press Writer

GREECE, N.Y. - Jason McElwain had done everything he was asked to do for the Greece Athena High School basketball team — keep the stats, run the clock, hand out water bottles.
That all changed last week for the team manager in the final home game of the season. The 17-year-old senior, who is autistic and usually sits on the bench in a white shirt and black tie, put on a uniform and entered the game with his team way ahead. McElwain proceeded to hit six 3-point shots, finished with 20 points and was carried off the court on his teammates' shoulders. "I ended my career on the right note," he told The Associated Press by phone Thursday. "I was really hotter than a pistol!"
In recent days, McElwain's phone has hardly stopped ringing. When his family went out for a meal, he was mobbed by well-wishers. A neighborhood boy came by to get a basketball autographed.
McElwain, 5-foot-6, was considered too small to make the junior varsity, so he signed on as team manager. He took up the same role with the varsity, doing anything to stay near the sport he loves. Coach Jim Johnson was impressed with his dedication, and thought about suiting up McElwain for the home finale.

His performance was jaw-dropping: 20 points in four minutes, making 6-of-10 3-point shots. The crowd went wild.
"It was as touching as any moment I have ever had in sports," Johnson told the Daily Messenger of Canandaigua.

McElwain didn't begin speaking until he was 5. He lacked social skills but things got easier as he got older. He found many friends and made his way through school in this Rochester suburb, although many of his classes were limited to a half-dozen students. And he found basketball.

On the varsity, he never misses practice and is a jack-of-all-trades. "And he is happy to do it," Johnson said. "He is such a great help and is well-liked by everyone on the team." Even though McElwain was in uniform for the Feb. 15 game, there was no guarantee he would play — Athena was battling for a division title.
The fans, however, came prepared. One section of students held up signs bearing his nickname "J-MAC" and cutouts of his face placed on Popsicle sticks.

The Trojans opened a large lead against the team from the nearby Spencerport. With four minutes left, McElwain took the court to deafening cheers. The ball came to him almost right away. His 3-point shot sailed completely off course, and the coach wondered if he made the wrong move. McElwain then missed a layup. Yet his father, David, was unruffled. "The thing about Jason is he isn't afraid of anything," he told the newspaper. "He doesn't care what people think about him. He is his own person."

On the next trip down the floor, McElwain got the ball again. This time he stroked a 3, all net. He was just warming up. "As soon as the first shot went in that's when I started to get going," he said. On the next attempt, he got another 3-pointer. Then another, and another. In fact, he would have made one more 3, but his foot was on the line, so he had to settle for 2 points.

Greece Athena won 79-43, and pandemonium reigned. McElwain signed autographs, posed for pictures and was hoisted by his teammates.

The Trojans begin sectional play Saturday and McElwain will be on the bench again, wearing his usual shirt and tie.
It doesn't bother him. More important, he said, is "trying to win a sectional title for the team."
McElwain will soon be done with high school basketball, then enroll in business management this fall at Monroe Community College.

"I'll go on to college and I'll try to hoop there," he said. "I just love it, it's one of the greatest sports in the world."

Just go already

No drama at my branch today even though I thought there would be. My bosses leaving was delayed until Tuesday. It is however a done deal. She still does not realize that I know, but I have good sources and she is clumsy with her paper trail. There is just a formality of meeting with a head honcho who most likely knows what she wants to meet for. That was supposed to happen this afternoon, but our downtown office was robbed so he was there instead and rescheduled their meeting. Everyone is fine, no gunshots or anything. Typical quiet in and out robbery. This is the second robbery at that branch in the last year.

I would just like it to be over so we can move on.

Gonna be sore later

Played racquetball today with Paul. I have not played in many years so I flet a bit clumsey but we had some decent sets. I decided to let Paul win all of them in order to make him way overconfident for future matches. I also discovered that tons of walking around Pittsburgh does not necessarily do that much to boost your cardio stamina. I'll either have to kick up the cardio workouts or take an oxygen tank to the court with me.

Working 9 to 5, what a way to make a living ...

I make a point of being positive at work. Each day, no matter what is happening at work and no matter what I know I am heading into as I drive in on my commute on the winding hilly freeway as I sing along with XM Radio, I make the decision to not sweat things and just deal with whatever comes up. BTW, I read an article one time that singing along to the radio during your commute is a great way to start the day, rather than obsessing about the Bull S**t you know is coming at the end of your drive. While I don't sing into an imaginary microphone I do rock the house, or car in this case.

Anyhoooo, that being said I have no problem bitching about the people that crap all over my day and try to affect my sweet sunny disposition. Seriously, I fell like statue among birds in my own office. " Sure, you need to crap on me go ahead. Who's next, just crap anywhere. That's just freaking craptacular. " My boss, the one who is probably leaving this Friday has a meeting to go to today. So instead of doing the normal thing that any chimpanzee would know to do which is drive herself, she has the other Office Manager drive her, wait around or go shopping or whatever for three hours and then bring her back. Meanwhile I'm busting my behind ( I really did bust it too, there is now a crack in it) getting all the weekly reports done that are supposed to be in today and dealing with customers and anything else that comes up. Why these two needed to play " Driving Misss Daisy " today of all days I cannot figure out. What is going through their minds?

But two things actually made the day better. One was my attitude towards it all. I know I am leading by example for the rest of the staff and I know they see that. Second is a conversation I had with my higher up boss when she called about a question on my reports. She thanked me and said she recognizes the work I am doing in what probably is a " unique " situation at my branch. It was said like " we can't talk about it right now, but I know. " So that was good to hear.

Sniff, I hab a code

I spent my day off today laying around and going through a box of kleenex. My floor looks like a cotton field. Having snot issues aint pretty. I was better once I got loopy on medicine, but the real sucky part was waking up this morning with a massive sinus headache and having no medicine of any kind. So with stuffy nose and killer headache I had to trek to the store in the freezing cold this morning to get some relief. Is there a worse way to start your day? I felt better as the day went on and I am hoping it is just a sinus thing.

No more air guitar

I have once again become a student of Paul. First it was chess which I am still working on my skill, now he has started to teach me guitar. I have always wanted to learn a musical instrument so I am excited about learning more. As I type this I am trying to remember the chords we went over tonight and I realize this is going to take a lot of practice and work. And it takes up less room than a piano.

Yay Federal Holiday

No work today. Correction, I will work very hard at relaxing today.

Weekend

Busy and fun weekend this week. Grace, Jerry and Matt came into town and along with Paul and Alison, we all took a trip to West Virginia to visit the Blenko Glass Factory. Matt also went on a tour and info session of the University of Pittsburgh. Matt may be the next family member to be recruited to Pittsburgh. We will see if U of Pittsburgh makes it onto the final list of choices for college. Some shopping, good meals, and running around Pittsburgh rounded out the weekend before the Michiganders left for home today after brunch at Alison and Paul's house.

I was glad to be able to go to Blenko Glass, it has been years since I have been there. I started collecting hand blown Blenko Glass several years ago. My mother got me started as she collected it for many years. I have several of her pieces and together with mine; a nice collection is coming together. This trip, I only purchased one piece, a blue triangular vase. I also was surprised with a " blue face plate " upon returning back to Pittsburgh. Thanks Grace and Jerry! I hope to go back in the near future, after saving some money, and get some pieces I really liked. Going to the factory directly is the best way to acquire pieces because the onsite store has much better pricing than on the website or through the stores that sell it.

Also saw " Eight Below " at the movies. It was an ok movie. A good story of survival among some cool sled dogs in the frozen Antarctic. The human actors play second fiddle to the dogs as a focus in this movie after they have to leave them behind during a harsh winter to fend for themselves while enduring a variety of dangers. Frankly, humans could learn a lesson or two from the dogs in this movie about loyalty, sacrifice, and living together in this world. To the humans credit, in particular Paul Walker's character, he is filled with some major regret at leaving his " kids " behind and sets out to retrieve them even while faced with little hope of finding them alive. It's a sad movie and one that can make you feel good too. I'd recommend it.

Me, in your eyes ...

The Johari Window was invented by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingram in the 1950s as a model for mapping personality awareness. By describing yourself from a fixed list of adjectives, then asking your friends and colleagues to describe you from the same list, a grid of overlap and difference can be built up.

Duck, it's the VP

So Grandpa Cheney finally shot something other than his mouth off and what happens? He actually shoots someone. I guess the American people were shooting enough holes in what this administration says, that now he is shooting back. WTF is a morally corrupt 110 year old whose had like 72 heart attacks doing even being around loud gunfire? I assume Dubya was strapped safe and sound in his car seat in the secret service car and out of harms way.

Now there is controversy over the release of information, how it was downplayed, and how much he is trying to cover it up. Wow, controversy from the white house. How shocking. How would you like to work for these two? You're the spokesperson and your boss does something stupid and you get to be the one who is grilled like a freaking cheese sandwich.

But it's ok, they have chosen the ultimate fair and balanced news organization, Fox News, to tell the story days after the fact. Excuse me while I throw up in my mouth a little bit. (happens everytime I think of Fox News). Let's see, 200 channels on cable, one of which has Cheney blowing smoke out of the side of his face. Yeeeeah, let's see what is on the other 199.

Work = "sigh"

Before I complain too much about work, I will point out that working for my company here in Pittsburgh is way better than in Michigan. Not in terms of the people I worked with, because I made some great friends at my job in Michigan, but more in terms of corporate politics and peoples egos. It's just better here. I get along great with most of the people i have worked with so far. I realize that there will always be issues in any job that annoy you or frustrate you. For me and many of my coworkers, especially at the bar after work, venting is a good release. So here goes.
(feel free to break for a montage if your eyes start to gloss over by clicking here)

I am currently in a quandry about what I should do, if anything about the attitude of my co-managers. There is a lot of negativity among them right now. They are frustrated with how their jobs are turning out. I figure they are experiencing a little regret about leaving their former employer. I do not have too much sympathy for them, because I do not see any effort on their part to meet the challenges head on. We have a brand new branch and that is a great opportunity. A new branch means very low goals and a whole community that wants to check you out. But they seem way too focused on how things were different at their old jobs and make negative comments on a regular basis. Now, I am in charge of the staff including their development and morale. How the hell can I do my job and build business at the branch if these two incompetant yentas cannot be self aware enough to realize that the example they set is unprofessional and detrimental to the business and its employees. I also do not want to become associated with the reputations they are building for themselves. My courses of action include bringing it up to them directly, or to my bosses, or have to work twice as hard to overcome their damage and let them take part in successes that they do not deserve but would be recognized for by association. I won't let anyone else make me look bad, I won't go down with a sinking ship, and nobody will take credit for my work even in the name of "teamwork."

Beware the robots

This link goes to a review of a book that I read in the New York Times. It's not usually the type of book I seek out, but it seems oddly intriguing. It has made my list of books to add to my collection. I plan to fill my bookshelves with a diverse collection, so this will fit in nicely.

Pair it with this link, and you too can be ready for when the robots attack.

The New York Times is a great read. It has world news, solid editorial content, and occasionally some potential life saving information. It does a good job of satisfying my need for news. It makes a good coffee shop read. One day I will splurge on a subscription.

From CNN web site:

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, spraying the fellow hunter in the face and chest with shotgun pellets.

Harry Whittington, a millionaire attorney from Austin, was in stable condition in the intensive care unit of a Corpus Christi hospital Sunday, said Yvonne Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Christus Spohn Health System. ...

Randomness on a lazy Sunday

It's snowing in Pittsburgh -- Finally. Oh wait, it just stopped. No wait, there it goes again.

This morning Caribou Coffee had sugar cookies dipped in chocolate with frosting on top. So much sugar and caffeine in one sitting. It is the beginning of a designated day of comfort food that will end with dinner at Alison and Paul's tonight. I suggested homemade mac and cheese among other favorites.

On the drive down to the South Side this morning, I noticed a trail along the river for the first time. Gotta check that out for running/biking.

Stopped at Lowes to look at window coverings. About a minute of that gave me a headache so I went next door to Best Buy and drooled over the plasma tv's.

Am home now, deciding between going for a walk in the falling snow or taking a nap. I think the nap will win out.

Speak into the microphone please

While testifying before a senate committee on electronic eavesdropping, Atty General Alberto Gonzales used past presidents as precedent for what Dubya has been doing. He cited the electronic surveillance used by Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Wilson, and Roosevelt.

What the hell kind of electronic means could George Washington have used? And why did he leave Nixon off the list? Perhaps because Nixon was Republican and the sole reason FISA ( foreign intelligence survelliance act, note the word foreign, not american) was enacted to keep innocent Americans, individuals and peaceful groups, from being spied on? Even that law gives the Feds 72 hours after the covert surveillance to get warrants. So why not get them if for just purposes? Selective memory and reasoning is a powerful propaganda tool. It’s right up there with scapegoats and using 9/11 as an excuse for everything.

These are the days of our lives

cityopit.jpg

It's been three months since I moved to Pittsburgh and it still seems new. I see, experience, or learn new things everyday it seems like. In many ways I feel like I am still getting settled in. I guess that may be because I still need some more furniture for my apartment. But little by little it has been coming together. So many things I want to do, so many plans. I always feel like I have to have my life a certain way in a certain order before I try something new or take a risk. I think moving and starting a life here in Pittsburgh has made me figure out that if I wait for my probably unrealistic feeling of contentment in every aspect of life I probably would miss out on a lot. Maybe I have already, But then I realize, there’s so much time ahead.

Current mood = Reflective
Current music: Best of the Beatles (should be listening to the Doors and smoking a doobie, but that would be wrong)

Speaking of Pitt,

Customer at my branch today: " Sorry to keep you waiting Brent, I was just kibitzing with your coworker. "

Me: " Kibitzing huh? What is kabitizing? "

Customer: " your not from around here are you? "

Sorry Yinzer, still learning Pittsburghese.

Wouldn't it be nice:

-- To turn that corner in my life where money was not such an issue.
-- If your job was your hobby
-- If people you have to be around every day were more self aware
-- If Dumbass drivers were made to lay down in the road and be speed bumps
-- If those of us that have trouble sleeping through the night could experience twelve straight hours of deep sleep.
-- Not to worry
-- To individually have the power to change the attitudes of ignorant and hate filled people.

-- To have a magic wand and make all the above happen with the wave of your hand

Overtime pay? Yeah right ...

Another long week has come to an end. The decorations are coming down, the food tables have been put away, and the office has gotten a good cleaning. The grand opening celebration was a big success and many compliments were paid to me and my coworkers on putting it altogether while still taking care of our daily business. While it was a good thing and a good way to showcase ourselves to the community, I am glad it is over. Now that it is out of the way, I think it will give everyone at our branch a main aspect to focus on, that being what we need to be doing to build business. Our numbers are looking good; we were ahead of our goals for the first month of the year. Now there are still 11 months to go, but we take the little successes when we can. After having to work this morning, I now plan to spend a lazy weekend catching up on sleep and just maybe catching up on blogging.

February 08, 2006

Hi ho Hi ho off to work I go

Tomorrow is the big grand opening celebration. I don't know if there will be enough coffee, Mountain Dew, and Snickers bars to get me through the day and evening.

Outta this world

GOOGLE EARTH ROCKS.

Work drama

I knew the day was going to be excrutiatingly long when I was already checking the clock at 9:20 this morning. Started the day by learning that after the company recently put a lot of the managers, including me, on a monthly incentive plan rather than the traditional performance quarterly bonus plan, they then cut the payouts for referrals on the plan. I knew there was something behind the change. I knew it wouldn't be for the better of most like was promised. I could go on and on about how shocked I am but it's so typical it doesn't even faze me.

Current mood = annoyed but motivated to polish resume

But then the second part of the day: My manager who has been with the company six months interviewed at her old company today. Not surprising, the more I think about it the more I think the office would be better off. I was told this by someone who she told in confidence and was sworn to secrecy. HA.

Current mood = so tired of BS. But realizing drama with new people can workout good for the guy with experience.

Hilarious SNL skit re: Narnia

Interesting fact

I just heard on the radio which I un-mute during commercials, that the 120 footballs to be used in todays big game will be injetced with synthetic DNA. The purpose is to identify genuine Super Bowl footballs from fakes when people try to sell them or otherwise claim they have an authentic signed Super Bowl ball. Interesting.

I'm a bad Pittsburger, I have no Steeler attire to wear today. I got away with it at work Friday (Steeler day) by wearing a black shirt and my gold bank pin. ( I usually wear a silver pin) Luckily, I have many gold colored University of Michigan shirts to wear with a dark colored sweat shirt and black jeans. So I can safely travel to A & P's house without being attacked as unloyal to "Steeler Town."

Classic movie

Just hanging around Apartment today before heading over to Paul and Alsion's for some Super Bowl festivities later today. I'm currently watching " Office Space. " This movie will never lose its relevance and appeal to the average person who does the old nine to five daily routine. Classic.

News things

So many Muslims are upset over an editorial cartoon recently published in a Danish newspaper. In fact, so upset that they are " protesting" by kidnapping, burning buildings and embassies, pillaging, etc.

So my question to all those offended enough to act this way over a cartoon published in a western newspaper: Where the hell is your outrage at suicide bombings, hostage taking, hostage beheadings and so on that are done in the name of your faith?

Speaking of faith, from the fine tolerant people at the AFA:
NBC continues its anti-Christian bigotry. Please take action today!
NBC, fresh from giving us the anti-Christian The Book of Daniel, has decided to hit back at the Christian community by presenting an episode of Will and Grace which mocks the crucifixion of Christ.

On the April 13 edition of NBC's Will and Grace, Britney Spears will appear as a Christian conservative sidekick to Sean Hayes' character, Jack, who hosts his own talk show, on the April 13 episode, the network said.

Jack's fictional network, Out TV, is bought by a Christian TV network, leading to Spears contributing a cooking segment called " Cruci-fixin's. "

Now don't get me wrong, B. Spears would not be my first choice to see on one of my regular programs but IMHO, these so called advancers of " traditional values " should really worry about the seemingly endless cycles of scandals that envelope their faiths. If they could see through the clouds of their own of hypocrisy, they might realize religion and faith should be a way of living their own lives rather than trying to restrict the freedoms of others.

It's how you say it

Our local branches were given $100 budgets to go out and buy Steeler football items to decorate our barnches for the Super Bowl. Our regional managers visited branches today to "judge" and the branch that did the best job of hanging balloons and streamers colored black and gold won lunch for the staff. Evidently our efforts did not make our branch tacky enough and instead of keeping it fun as was first intended, it was commented how some other branches had great spirit and went all out and said it in a way that made the staff feel they somehow failed ??? So besides the fact that most employees can think of better things to do with the $500 spent on football cookies and posters, no one made it clear just how ridiculous looking we were supposed to make our financial institution look while trying to make little old ladies trust us as professional guardians of their money. Kudos to the corporate brainiacs for taking another shot at morale over decorations.

Tomorrow, I am taking the branch credit card and buying lunch for the staff.
